    Mount Field National Park

Mount Field National Park is a mountain and forest system in southern Tasmania defined by cool-temperate rainforest, waterfalls, tall eucalypt forest, alpine lakes, and glacially shaped high country. Rising rapidly from densely forested valleys to the Mount Field Plateau, the park contains an unusually compressed transition between Tasmania's lowland and alpine environments. The terrain changes with elevation from fern-filled rainforest and deeply shaded streams around Russell and Horseshoe Falls to snow-gum woodland, moorland, rocky dolerite slopes, and alpine lakes around Lake Dobson and Tarn Shelf. Glacial erosion has shaped the upper plateau into a landscape of tarns, shallow basins, and rugged mountain ridges. High rainfall, winter snow, autumn colour, mist, and rapidly changing mountain weather create strong seasonal variation between the sheltered forest and exposed alpine country.

    Overview

Mount Field National Park is structured around a steep transition from wet forest at lower elevations to glacially modified alpine terrain on the Mount Field Plateau. Abundant rainfall feeds streams and waterfalls beneath giant eucalypts and temperate rainforest, while higher elevations contain lakes, tarns, moorland, and exposed dolerite country. This elevation change gives the park two strongly contrasting landscape characters within a relatively compact area. Russell Falls and Horseshoe Falls represent the dark, densely vegetated lower forest, while Lake Dobson provides access to the alpine plateau and the chain of glacial lakes and tarns extending towards Tarn Shelf. The visual structure of the park shifts from enclosed forest compositions of water, ferns, and towering trees to open mountain landscapes of reflective lakes, snow gums, rocky ridges, and sky. Mist, frost, snow, autumn foliage, and filtered forest light continually alter both environments.
