Mist hangs over the Gordon River and surrounding temperate rainforest on Tasmania’s rugged west coast.
Gordon River is a remote wilderness river flowing through the temperate rainforest of western Tasmania before entering Macquarie Harbour. Dark tannin-stained water, dense rainforest and largely undeveloped riverbanks create a landscape with an unusually pristine character. Calm conditions produce exceptionally strong reflections, making the river one of Tasmania's defining wilderness photography locations.

Why This Light
Season
Seasonally Distinct
Summer brings longer daylight and generally milder conditions, while autumn can produce calm water and atmospheric morning light. Winter is wetter and darker, strengthening the rainforest character, while spring brings high water levels and rapidly changing western weather.
Crowds
Usually Quiet
Restrictions
The lower Gordon River is normally reached by boat from Strahan across Macquarie Harbour, with commercial cruises providing access deep into the river corridor. There is no conventional road access along the photographed wilderness section. Weather and river conditions can affect boat operations and opportunities to photograph from the water.
