    Russell Falls

    Water Feature

Russell Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall surrounded by cool temperate rainforest in Mount Field National Park. Water descends across broad horizontal ledges of dark rock framed by tree ferns, moss and dense forest, creating one of Tasmania's most recognisable waterfall scenes. The sheltered forest setting maintains lush vegetation throughout much of the year, while rainfall strongly influences the volume and character of the cascade.

    Softens Contrast

    Season

    Seasonally Distinct

Winter and spring generally bring stronger water flow and particularly lush forest conditions. Summer can produce lower water levels, while autumn adds subtle colour to the surrounding vegetation.

Russell Falls is reached from the Mount Field National Park visitor area along a well-established forest trail. The approach is short and relatively easy, although wet conditions can make paths and viewing areas slippery. A valid Tasmania Parks Pass is required for vehicle entry to the national park.

    Photography Notes

The classic composition places the complete tiered waterfall within a frame of tree ferns and dense temperate rainforest. Wide-angle lenses capture the falls and surrounding forest, while longer focal lengths isolate individual cascades, wet rock and vegetation details. Overcast conditions are particularly effective for controlling the large brightness difference between white water and dark forest. Slower shutter speeds emphasise the layered flow of the cascade, while rainfall can substantially increase both water volume and atmosphere.
