    Purnululu & Bungle Bungles

Purnululu and the Bungle Bungles form a distinctive sandstone landscape in the East Kimberley, defined by striped rock domes, deeply incised gorges and isolated ranges rising from broad savanna plains. Within Purnululu National Park, the Bungle Bungle Range contains one of Australia's most recognisable systems of weathered sandstone formations. The terrain transitions between rounded sandstone towers, narrow chasms, broad creek beds and rugged escarpments. Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm reveal contrasting forms of erosion, while Piccaninny Creek extends through the southern range between closely packed domes and exposed rock. Seasonal rainfall influences creek flow, vegetation and surface colour, while prolonged weathering continues to shape the narrow passages, rock walls and distinctive banded formations across the range.

    Overview

Purnululu is structured around the Bungle Bungle Range, an isolated sandstone massif shaped by prolonged erosion into hundreds of rounded towers and deeply incised valleys. Alternating orange and dark bands emphasise the layered surfaces of the domes, while surrounding plains and rocky ranges reinforce the scale and isolation of the formation. Across the range, broad creek systems narrow into enclosed gorges, chasms and passages between towering sandstone walls. Cathedral Gorge forms a large natural amphitheatre, while Echidna Chasm cuts deeply into the northern range and Piccaninny Creek provides a major corridor through the southern domes. The visual structure of the region is defined by repeating sandstone forms, strong geological pattern and the contrast between open plains and enclosed rock corridors. Elevated perspectives reveal the density of the range, while ground-level views emphasise towering walls, narrow passages and changing canyon light.
