Aerial view of the Buccaneer Archipelago and Horizontal Falls, West Kimberley, Western Australia.
West Kimberley is a diverse landscape in northern Western Australia, defined by ancient limestone ranges, sandstone uplands, major river systems and an intricate tidal coastline. The region extends from the rugged interior around Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek towards the islands, reefs and waterways of the Buccaneer Archipelago and surrounding Kimberley coast. The terrain transitions between limestone ranges, rocky gorges, savanna plains and deeply incised river valleys before reaching mangrove-lined channels, islands and broad tidal waters. Ancient reef formations shape much of the inland geology, while extreme tides strongly influence the coastal landscape. Seasonal rainfall alters river flow, waterfalls and vegetation across the interior, while powerful tidal cycles continually transform exposed reefs, channels and coastal waterways.

Overview
West Kimberley spans the transition between the rugged Kimberley interior and the Indian Ocean. Ancient Devonian reef formations create the limestone ranges around Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek, while sandstone country, river valleys and open savanna extend across the surrounding inland landscape. Towards the coast, the landscape breaks into islands, tidal channels and submerged reef systems. Horizontal Falls forms where powerful tides move through narrow coastal gaps, while Montgomery Reef emerges progressively as falling water levels expose a vast reef platform within the surrounding sea. The visual structure of the region is defined by the contrast between enclosed inland gorges and expansive tidal landscapes. Limestone walls, waterfalls and river corridors create strong features inland, while aerial perspectives reveal complex patterns of islands, reefs, mangroves and rapidly changing coastal water.
