Evening light illuminates Uluru above the vast desert plains of Australia’s Red Centre.
Uluru and Kata Tjuta form the photographic heart of Australia's Red Centre, defined by immense sandstone and conglomerate formations rising from broad desert plains. The area includes Uluru, Kata Tjuta and the surrounding desert landscapes of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The terrain transitions between open spinifex plains, low dunes and monumental rock formations. Uluru rises as a single sandstone mass, while Kata Tjuta forms a contrasting group of rounded domes separated by narrow valleys and rocky corridors. Seasonal rainfall, desert vegetation and changing atmospheric conditions influence colour and visibility, contributing to shifts in the appearance of the rock and surrounding plains.

Overview
Uluru and Kata Tjuta rise from an extensive desert plain shaped by ancient geological processes and prolonged erosion. Uluru forms a massive sandstone monolith marked by steep faces, erosion channels and caves, while Kata Tjuta consists of large conglomerate domes approximately 30 kilometres to the west. Around the formations, spinifex grasslands, red earth and low desert vegetation extend towards distant ranges. Mutitjulu Waterhole introduces a sheltered concentration of water and vegetation at the base of Uluru, while the Valley of the Winds passes between the domes of Kata Tjuta. The visual structure of the region is defined by the contrast between monumental rock and expansive desert terrain. Low-angle sunlight reveals changing colour and surface texture, while broad horizons, deep shadows and shifting weather emphasise the scale and isolation of the formations.
