Mist over a forest-fringed lake near Pemberton in the Karri Forests of Western Australia.

Mist drifts across still water surrounded by the lush forests of Pemberton, capturing the quiet atmosphere of Western Australia’s karri country.

    Karri Forests

The Karri Forests form a densely wooded landscape in southwest Western Australia, defined by towering karri trees, wet valleys and extensive native forest. The region centres on Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole, where tall eucalyptus forest grows across rolling terrain interspersed with rivers, wetlands and sheltered waterways. The terrain transitions between high-canopy karri forest, jarrah and marri woodland, fern-filled gullies and open river valleys. Around Walpole, ancient tingle forests add massive buttressed trees and dense understorey, while Warren National Park preserves extensive forest around the Warren River. Seasonal rainfall influences stream flow, vegetation and atmospheric conditions, contributing to shifts in forest colour, mist and filtered light throughout the year.

    Overview

The Karri Forests are structured around the high-rainfall landscapes of Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole, where karri trees form some of Australia's tallest forests. Dense stands occupy valleys and uplands, while rivers, wetlands and smaller forest systems create natural corridors through the wooded landscape. Around Pemberton, Warren National Park combines mature karri forest with the Warren River, while Beedelup Falls introduces cascades and wet forest vegetation. Farther south, the Valley of the Giants and surrounding Walpole forests contain ancient red tingle trees distinguished by enormous trunks and buttressed forms. The visual structure of the region is defined by vertical scale, layered vegetation and enclosed forest environments. Tall trunks create repeating patterns through the canopy, while winding roads, waterways, mist and filtered light introduce depth and changing atmospheric conditions.
