A forest road winds beneath the towering karri trees of Boranup Karri Forest, where pale trunks rise above dense green undergrowth near Margaret River.
Boranup Karri Forest is a tall karri forest south of Margaret River within Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, where pale trunks rise above a dense understorey close to the southwest coast. Roads and walking trails pass through extensive stands of mature karri, with changing canopy cover creating alternating areas of open light and deep shade. Repeating trunks, layered vegetation and winding forest roads provide opportunities for woodland, abstract and atmospheric landscape photography.

Best Light
Soft light controls contrast beneath the canopy, while low-angle light creates separation between repeating trunks and reveals texture across bark and understor
Why This Light
Season
Seasonally Distinct
Summer brings drier understorey, warmer forest-floor tones and stronger patches of sunlight filtering between the karri trunks. Winter brings wetter vegetation, deeper greens and darker bark tones, while softer light creates more even illumination throughout the forest.

Restrictions
Boranup Karri Forest is reached from Caves Road south of Margaret River, with several roads, tracks and stopping points providing access to the forest. Conditions on unsealed forest roads can change after heavy rain or park operations, and temporary closures may affect particular routes. Visitors should use established roads, parking areas and walking trails and check current park alerts before travelling.
