    Shark Bay

Shark Bay is a vast coastal landscape on Western Australia's Indian Ocean coast, defined by long peninsulas, shallow turquoise bays, white beaches and red desert terrain. The region includes Francois Peron National Park, Shell Beach and Hamelin Pool, where arid landscapes meet extensive marine environments. The terrain transitions between red-earth peninsulas, coastal dunes, tidal flats and exceptionally shallow bays. Seagrass meadows occupy large areas of sheltered water, while shell deposits, stromatolites and sweeping sandbars create distinctive coastal formations around the bay. Seasonal variation influences water colour, vegetation and atmospheric clarity, contributing to shifts in contrast between turquoise shallows, pale beaches and the surrounding red desert landscape.

    Overview

Shark Bay is structured around two long peninsulas enclosing a complex system of shallow gulfs, islands and tidal flats. Its sheltered marine environment contains extensive seagrass meadows, while exceptionally clear water reveals sandbars, channels and changing patterns across the shallow seabed. Along the eastern peninsula, Francois Peron National Park creates a strong transition between red desert cliffs, dunes and turquoise water. Shell Beach is formed from immense deposits of small white shells, while Hamelin Pool contains extensive stromatolite formations within highly saline shallow water. The visual structure of the region is defined by the contrast between arid land and expansive marine environments. Elevated and aerial perspectives reveal the geometry of peninsulas, sandbars and tidal flats, while coastal viewpoints emphasise red cliffs, pale shorelines and clear shallow water.
