Nyerere National Park is Africa's largest national park and one of the continent's greatest remaining wilderness landscapes, where the mighty Rufiji River, vast floodplains, oxbow lakes, miombo woodlands and open savannas combine to create one of East Africa's most diverse safari destinations. Covering more than 30,000 km² across southern Tanzania, the park protects the northern section of the historic Selous ecosystem and preserves an immense network of river channels, wetlands and untouched wilderness that supports exceptional wildlife populations within one of Africa's least-visited protected areas. The landscape is shaped by the Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest river, as it divides into countless channels, lagoons, sandbanks and seasonally flooded plains before continuing toward the Indian Ocean. Extensive miombo woodland extends away from the river into broad savannas, while permanent lakes, palm-fringed wetlands and dense riverine forests create an extraordinary diversity of habitats. Seasonal rainfall continually transforms the park. During the wet season, the Rufiji River expands across its floodplain, filling oxbow lakes and wetlands while creating lush green landscapes and spectacular birdlife. As the dry season advances, receding water concentrates wildlife along permanent channels and riverbanks, producing outstanding safari conditions.
