Wetlands and grasslands at Rietvlei Nature Reserve near Pretoria under dramatic summer clouds.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve protects one of the largest remaining natural grassland and wetland systems within the Gauteng metropolitan area. Seasonal wildflowers, open water, rolling grasslands and abundant birdlife create a surprisingly wild landscape between Pretoria and Centurion.

    Gauteng Nature & Landscapes

Gauteng Nature & Landscapes encompasses the remaining natural environments of South Africa's smallest yet most urbanised province. While Gauteng is best known for its cities, the region still preserves important fragments of Highveld grassland, wetland systems, rocky ridges and protected reserves that support a surprising diversity of wildlife, birdlife and natural scenery within close proximity of Johannesburg and Pretoria. The landscape is shaped by the elevated interior plateau of the Highveld, where rolling grasslands are interrupted by quartzite ridges, seasonal wetlands, river systems and isolated rocky outcrops. Many of Gauteng's protected natural areas preserve remnants of ecosystems that once covered much of the province before urban expansion transformed the surrounding landscape. Today these reserves provide important ecological refuges while also protecting some of the region's most photogenic natural environments. Seasonal variation strongly influences the appearance of the landscape. Summer rainfall transforms the grasslands into vibrant green expanses, fills wetlands and attracts large concentrations of birdlife, while winter brings golden grasslands, crisp atmospheric clarity and some of the most rewarding landscape photography conditions of the year.

    Overview

Gauteng Nature & Landscapes is structured around a network of protected reserves, bird sanctuaries, botanical gardens and remnant Highveld ecosystems distributed across the province. These landscapes preserve important examples of the grassland biome while protecting wetlands, river corridors and rocky ridge systems that support biodiversity within one of Africa's largest metropolitan regions. Each landscape contributes a different element to Gauteng's natural character. Rietvlei Nature Reserve preserves open grassland scenery, large mammals and wetland habitats south of Pretoria. Suikerbosrand protects one of the province's most extensive quartzite ridge systems, while Marievale Bird Sanctuary contains one of the most important wetland complexes in Gauteng. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden combines indigenous vegetation with cliffs, waterfalls and birdlife within a compact protected environment. The visual structure of the region is defined by broad open grasslands, seasonal wetlands and rugged ridgelines rising above the surrounding plateau. Water bodies attract abundant birdlife, indigenous vegetation creates seasonal colour variations and elevated viewpoints reveal expansive Highveld landscapes extending toward the horizon. Together these environments provide a natural counterpoint to the urban landscapes that dominate much of Gauteng.
