Hot air balloons drift above the fairy chimneys and volcanic valleys surrounding Göreme at sunrise, Cappadocia, Turkey.
Göreme lies at the heart of Cappadocia, surrounded by a dense concentration of fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches, cave dwellings, and deeply eroded volcanic valleys. The town sits within a landscape shaped by millions of years of erosion and centuries of human settlement, creating one of Turkey’s most recognisable cultural landscapes. Soft volcanic tuff surrounding Göreme has been carved into cones, ridges, pinnacles, and enclosed valleys, while generations of inhabitants excavated the same rock to create homes, churches, monasteries, and other structures. The result is an unusually close relationship between natural geology and human architecture. Today, Göreme forms the central hub of Cappadocia, with surrounding valleys, elevated viewpoints, historic cave architecture, and daily hot-air-balloon flights defining much of the area's visual character.

Overview
Göreme occupies a basin within the wider volcanic landscape of central Cappadocia. Erosion of layers of tuff and harder volcanic material has produced an intricate terrain of fairy chimneys, narrow valleys, exposed ridges, and sculpted rock formations. Settlements developed within this terrain rather than simply around it, with buildings and entire interiors carved directly into the rock. The Göreme Open Air Museum preserves one of the area's most important concentrations of rock-cut churches, chapels, monasteries, and Byzantine frescoes. Beyond the museum and town, interconnected valleys extend towards Uçhisar, Çavuşin, and surrounding areas, creating a continuous landscape of geological formations, cave architecture, vineyards, and historic routes. The visual character of Göreme changes dramatically through the day. Sunrise brings hundreds of hot-air balloons above the valleys in suitable conditions, while low-angle light reveals the texture and depth of the volcanic terrain. Elevated viewpoints provide broad panoramas across Cappadocia, while sunset, blue hour, and illuminated cave buildings create a contrasting view of the landscape after dark.
