Paragliders soar above Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon against the mountains near Fethiye, Turkey.
Fethiye & Ölüdeniz form one of southwestern Turkey’s most distinctive coastal landscapes, where steep forested mountains descend towards turquoise bays, sheltered lagoons, rocky headlands, and Mediterranean beaches. The area stretches from the harbour town of Fethiye towards Ölüdeniz and the dramatic mountain terrain surrounding Babadağ. Ölüdeniz is centred on its famous Blue Lagoon and sweeping bay, while Babadağ rises sharply behind the coast to more than 1,900 metres. Nearby Butterfly Valley is enclosed by towering cliffs that plunge directly towards a narrow beach and the Mediterranean, adding a more remote character to the coastline. The combination of high mountains, clear water, beaches, forest, and deeply indented coastal terrain creates considerable visual variety within a relatively compact area. Seasonal changes in vegetation, sea conditions, atmospheric haze, and light continually alter the appearance of the mountains and coastline.

Overview
The landscape is structured around the steep mountains of southwestern Turkey meeting the Mediterranean along a deeply indented coastline of bays, beaches, cliffs, and sheltered coves. Ölüdeniz occupies one of the area's most recognisable coastal settings, with the Blue Lagoon separated from the open sea by a curving sand and shingle spit beneath densely forested mountain slopes. Babadağ dominates the surrounding terrain, rising dramatically above Ölüdeniz and providing extensive views across the coastline, islands, mountains, and Mediterranean. Farther south, Butterfly Valley cuts deeply into the coastal mountains, where sheer cliffs enclose a narrow valley opening directly onto the sea. Together these landscapes create a strong transition from high mountain terrain to sheltered coastal environments. Photographically, Fethiye & Ölüdeniz works through elevation, colour, scale, and changing Mediterranean light. Elevated viewpoints reveal the geometry of bays and headlands, while beaches and coves provide more intimate coastal compositions. Paragliders descending from Babadağ add a distinctive human element, and early morning, late-afternoon, and sunset light can transform the turquoise water, forested slopes, cliffs, and distant mountain layers.
