    North Kimberley

North Kimberley is a remote wilderness landscape in northern Western Australia, defined by ancient sandstone plateaus, deeply incised rivers and major seasonal waterfalls. The area includes the Drysdale River and King George Falls, where extensive river systems cross rugged uplands before descending through escarpments towards the northern Kimberley coast. The terrain transitions between broad sandstone plateaus, rocky escarpments, river valleys and deeply cut gorges. Tropical savanna and open woodland cover much of the interior, while rivers create narrow corridors of denser vegetation, permanent pools and exposed rock through otherwise remote upland country. Seasonal rainfall strongly influences river flow, vegetation and waterfall conditions, transforming dry-season landscapes as monsoonal water moves through the plateau and towards the coast.

    Overview

North Kimberley occupies a rugged section of the Kimberley plateau where ancient sandstone has been extensively dissected by rivers and prolonged erosion. Broad uplands are interrupted by escarpments, rocky valleys and deep gorges, creating an exceptionally remote landscape with few settlements or developed access routes. The Drysdale River crosses the interior through savanna and woodland, forming pools, rapids and rocky channels along its course. Farther north, the King George River cuts through towering sandstone before reaching the coast at King George Falls, where the river descends directly from the plateau. The visual structure of the region is defined by immense scale and the contrast between horizontal plateau country and deeply incised waterways. Rivers and waterfalls create concentrated features within the rugged interior, while aerial perspectives reveal extensive patterns of sandstone, woodland and largely undeveloped wilderness.
