Great Theatre of Ephesus, Turkey
← Back to Ephesus
The Great Theatre is a monumental Roman theatre built into the western slope of Panayır Hill within the ancient city of Ephesus. Developed from an earlier Hellenistic theatre and substantially enlarged during the Roman period, its steep semicircular seating could accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. The surviving auditorium rises dramatically above the stage area, with views extending along ancient Harbour Street towards the former harbour. The theatre was used for performances, public gatherings and civic events.
