Pentecost River crossing on the Gibb River Road, Kimberley, Western Australia.
Pentecost River Crossing is a broad river ford on the Gibb River Road in the eastern Kimberley, backed by the sandstone escarpments of the Cockburn Range. Vehicles cross the shallow river over a rocky bed, with open savanna and the range forming the surrounding landscape. The combination of water, vehicles and the distinctive mountain backdrop provides opportunities for landscape and travel photography.

Best Light
Low-angle light strengthens relief across the Cockburn Range, while calm sections of the river can reflect the escarpment and surrounding vegetation.
Why This Light
Season
Seasonally Distinct
Summer brings higher river levels, greener vegetation and storm conditions across the Cockburn Range during the Kimberley wet season. Winter brings lower water levels, dry golden grasses and warmer red and ochre tones across the surrounding escarpments.

Restrictions
The crossing lies directly on the Gibb River Road near El Questro and is normally approached by high-clearance 4WD. River depth and road conditions vary substantially through the season, and the crossing can become unsafe or impassable following heavy rain. Saltwater crocodiles can occur in Kimberley waterways, so the river should not be treated as a safe place to wade or position equipment. Current road and river conditions should be checked before travel.
