Aerial view across the rugged Z Bend gorge and Murchison River in Kalbarri National Park, Western Australia.
Kalbarri is a rugged landscape on Western Australia's Indian Ocean coast, defined by the deeply incised gorges of the Murchison River and a contrasting coastline of sandstone cliffs and eroded rock formations. Kalbarri National Park extends from the river gorge inland to exposed coastal landscapes south of the town. The terrain transitions between broad semi-arid plains, layered sandstone gorges, winding river corridors and high coastal cliffs. Nature's Window, Z Bend and Kalbarri Skywalk overlook the inland canyon system, while Island Rock and Natural Bridge represent the strongly eroded coastal geology. Seasonal rainfall influences river flow, vegetation and wildflower displays, while changing coastal weather and low-angle light alter the colour and texture of the exposed sandstone.

Overview
Kalbarri is structured around the lower Murchison River, which has cut a deep and winding gorge through ancient sandstone before reaching the Indian Ocean. Layered red and ochre rock forms steep canyon walls, ridges and river bends across the inland section of Kalbarri National Park. Along the coast, the same sandstone landscape meets the ocean as a sequence of cliffs, headlands and eroded formations. Island Rock and Natural Bridge reveal the effects of persistent marine erosion, creating a contrasting coastal system within the wider national park landscape. The visual structure of the region is defined by the relationship between river, sandstone and ocean. Elevated viewpoints reveal the scale and geometry of the inland gorges, while coastal cliffs, rock formations and open horizons create broader compositions along the Indian Ocean.
