Aerial view of Gariep Dam and Lake Gariep, with water flowing through the dam’s spillway into the Orange River.
Gariep & Orange River forms the major inland water landscape of the southern Free State, centred on South Africa's largest reservoir and the upper reaches of the Orange River system. The region includes Gariep Dam, expansive water bodies, river valleys, semi-arid plains, and the transition zone between the Free State interior and the Karoo landscapes further south. The landscape is structured around the Orange River, which has shaped the terrain through long-term erosion while providing one of southern Africa's most important water resources. The creation of Gariep Dam transformed the natural river valley into a vast inland lake system that now dominates the region. Water is the defining element throughout the landscape. Broad reservoir views, rugged shorelines, islands, river channels, and distant plains create a landscape that contrasts strongly with the mountain environments of the eastern Free State and the grasslands of the central interior.

Overview
The Gariep & Orange River region is organised around the Orange River basin and the extensive water system created by Gariep Dam. The reservoir occupies a large section of the upper river valley, creating an intricate landscape of bays, peninsulas, islands, and shoreline environments extending across the provincial boundary between the Free State and Eastern Cape. Beyond the reservoir, the Orange River continues through a series of valleys and gorges that form one of the most significant river corridors in southern Africa. Semi-arid vegetation, open plains, rocky hills, and elevated viewpoints surround the water system, creating strong contrasts between land and water throughout the region. The visual character of the landscape is defined by scale, openness, and reflection. Vast water surfaces, distant horizons, changing weather systems, and low-angle light create constantly changing conditions across the reservoir and river basin. Seasonal water levels, storm activity, and atmospheric conditions contribute significantly to the appearance of the landscape.
