Aerial view across the Cockburn Range, Kimberley, Western Australia.
Cockburn Range is a rugged sandstone escarpment rising above the plains of the eastern Kimberley near El Questro and the Gibb River Road. Broad mesas, deeply eroded gullies and red cliff faces form a distinctive backdrop across the Pentecost River valley. The long escarpment, changing light and open foregrounds provide opportunities for large-scale landscape photography.

Why This Light
Season
Seasonally Distinct
Summer brings greener vegetation, seasonal waterfalls and storm clouds around the escarpment during the Kimberley wet season. Winter brings dry golden grasses, clearer skies and stronger red and ochre tones across the exposed sandstone cliffs.

Restrictions
The Cockburn Range extends across a large area rather than having a single designated viewpoint, with accessible views from sections of the Gibb River Road and roads around El Questro. Road conditions vary seasonally and high-clearance 4WD is generally appropriate for travel through this part of the Kimberley. Avoid leaving public roads or entering pastoral, conservation or culturally sensitive land without permission, and check current road conditions before travel.
