Trail leading to the Meiringspoort Waterfall above the N12 road within the dramatic red sandstone canyon landscapes of Meiringspoort in the Swartberg Mountains of South Africa.
Cango & Red Rock Landscapes showcase some of the most rugged and visually distinctive scenery in the Klein Karoo. Located north of Oudtshoorn, the area combines dramatic mountain terrain, deep valleys, exposed rock formations, and some of the region's most recognisable natural landmarks, including the Cango Caves and Meiringspoort. The landscape feels wilder and more dramatic than the surrounding agricultural valleys. Red and ochre rock formations rise above dry riverbeds, narrow gorges cut through the mountains, and winding roads reveal constantly changing views across the terrain. The region is defined by texture, colour, and geological scale. Light plays a major role throughout the area. Early morning and late afternoon conditions bring warm tones to the rock faces, while shadows moving through the valleys create contrast and depth across the landscape. These changing conditions make the region particularly rewarding for landscape photographers.

Overview
The Cango & Red Rock Landscapes region lies between the agricultural basin around Oudtshoorn and the more rugged mountain terrain of the northern Klein Karoo. The area includes sandstone ridges, rocky valleys, dry river systems, and striking geological formations shaped over millions of years by erosion and uplift. Photographically, the region offers a very different character from the open plains elsewhere in the Klein Karoo. Narrow gorges, cliff faces, rock formations, and winding mountain roads create more intimate landscape opportunities, while elevated viewpoints reveal wider scenes stretching across the surrounding valleys. Locations such as Meiringspoort, the Cango Caves, and the Red Stone Hills provide some of the area's most recognisable photographic subjects. The combination of rugged terrain, warm rock colours, and changing light gives the landscape its distinctive appeal. Whether photographing mountain passes, canyon scenery, waterfalls, or expansive views across the surrounding Karoo, the region offers a strong sense of scale and natural drama throughout the year.
