Bay of Fires & Northeast Coast

Bay of Fires & Northeast Coast is a coastal landscape system on Tasmania's northeastern shore defined by pale granite headlands, brilliant white beaches, turquoise water, and boulders coloured by vivid orange and red lichens. From Binalong Bay north through the Bay of Fires to Eddystone Point, long beaches and rocky coves form an unusually undeveloped coastline. The terrain alternates between sweeping sandy shores, sheltered bays, granite platforms, rocky headlands, coastal heath, and low forest. Around The Gardens, sculpted granite boulders meet clear shallow water, while farther north the coastline becomes increasingly open and exposed before reaching the distinctive headland and lighthouse at Eddystone Point. Changes in tide, weather, and coastal light continually alter the relationship between rock, sand, and sea. Clear conditions intensify the contrast between orange lichen, white beaches, and blue-green water, while cloud, sea mist, breaking surf, and low-angle light reveal a quieter and more atmospheric character.

    Overview

Bay of Fires & Northeast Coast extends along a largely undeveloped section of eastern Tasmania where granite geology has created a succession of broad beaches, rocky coves, offshore rocks, and low headlands. The area's characteristic orange and red colour comes from lichens growing across pale granite surfaces, producing one of the most recognisable coastal landscapes in Tasmania. Each part of the coast has a distinct character within this wider system. Binalong Bay combines sweeping white sand with sheltered turquoise water, The Gardens concentrates the area's characteristic lichen-covered granite into intimate coves and rocky shorelines, while Eddystone Point marks a more remote and exposed northern landscape of open sea, granite coast, and historic lighthouse. The visual structure of the region is defined by strong contrasts of colour, texture, and scale. Granite boulders provide detailed foregrounds against clean horizons and expansive beaches, while rock pools, reflections, coastal vegetation, surf, and isolated headlands introduce smaller compositions. Sunrise and changing maritime weather continually reshape the colour and atmosphere of the coast.
