Northern lights illuminating drifting icebergs at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in Vatnajökull National Park, southeast Iceland.
← Back to South Coast
The lagoon formed as the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreated, filling a basin with meltwater and floating ice. Icebergs calve from the glacier face and move slowly through the lagoon before reaching the sea. Seasonal light, weather, and ice conditions strongly influence the appearance of the lagoon and surrounding terrain.

Photography Notes
Jökulsárlón is photographed from shoreline viewpoints and elevated edges along the lagoon. Morning and late-afternoon light add colour and contrast to the ice, while overcast conditions reduce glare and reveal texture. Long lenses isolate ice details; wide angles capture scale and glacier context.
