    Ljótipollur

    Water Feature

Ljótipollur is a circular explosion crater lake located within the Veiðivötn volcanic system in Iceland’s central Highlands. The crater forms a steep red scoria bowl surrounding a deep blue lake. Its contained geometry and strong colour contrast create a clear and highly graphic landscape composition.

    Quick Facts

    Access

    Roadside / Step-out

    5–15 min

    Elevation Gain

    40 m

    Best Light

    Golden Hour
    Overcast

Light works best when low-angle light enhances slope texture because shadow gradients increase rim definition and strengthen circular form.

    Why This Light

    Low-Angle Relief
    Softens Contrast

    Season

    Seasonally Distinct

Access is dependent on Highland F-road openings, typically late June through early autumn. Outside this period, snow cover and road closures restrict vehicle access.

    Crowds

    Usually Quiet

    Photography Notes

Stand higher along the rim to preserve circular symmetry. Shooting too low exaggerates the near slope and flattens the far rim. Slight lateral movement alters how complete the crater appears in frame. Avoid harsh overhead light, which removes texture from the red slopes and reduces colour separation. Overcast conditions deepen the blue water and balance tonal contrast between rim and lake.
