Chile is a long and narrow country extending along the western edge of South America between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range. Overview
Chile’s geography is structured around two major landscape systems: the Pacific coastal margin and the Andes mountain range. Between these systems lie interior valleys and basins that support much of the country’s population and agriculture. Northern Chile contains the Atacama Desert, one of the driest regions on Earth, characterised by salt flats, volcanic peaks, and high-altitude plateaus. Central Chile transitions into Mediterranean-style valleys and coastal mountains. Southern Chile becomes increasingly mountainous and glaciated, with dense forests, fjords, and ice fields extending toward Patagonia. The visual structure of the country is defined by this north–south sequence of desert landscapes, mountain ranges, river valleys, and coastal environments.
