    Mam Tor

    Landmark

Mam Tor is a prominent 517-metre hill above Castleton in the Peak District National Park, marking the western end of the Great Ridge overlooking the Hope Valley and Edale. Its rounded summit and sweeping ridgeline connect towards Hollins Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill, with views across the surrounding valleys and limestone hills. The elevated position, distinctive ridge contours and frequent valley mist provide opportunities for landscape photography, particularly around sunrise and sunset.

    Season

    Seasonally Distinct

Summer brings green hillsides and cultivated fields across the Hope Valley, with long daylight illuminating the Great Ridge and surrounding slopes. Winter reveals subdued grassland colours, occasional frost or snow along the summit and atmospheric valley mist during suitable weather conditions.

    Restrictions

Mam Tor is accessible via a well-established stone-paved path from the Mam Nick parking area near the summit. The ascent is relatively short but involves uphill walking, steps and exposed sections that can become slippery during wet or icy conditions. The summit and Great Ridge are popular with walkers and photographers, particularly at sunrise, sunset and weekends. Strong winds and rapidly changing weather are common on the exposed ridgeline. Parking is limited at popular access points, and visitors should remain on established paths to reduce erosion.

    Photography Notes

Photograph the Great Ridge from Mam Tor's summit, using its winding path and grassy slopes as leading lines towards Hollins Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill. Wide-angle lenses emphasise the ridge's sweeping contours, while telephoto lenses compress the overlapping hills and fields of the Hope Valley. Sunrise can produce atmospheric mist or temperature inversions in the valleys below, separating the ridge from the surrounding landscape. Side lighting reveals the hill's shape, while frost and occasional snow add definition to the summit and exposed paths.
