Overview
Argentina’s geography is structured around three major landscape systems: the Andes mountains in the west, the interior plains known as the Pampas, and the southern Patagonian region. Each system contributes to the country’s diverse terrain and environmental conditions. The Andes contain many of the highest peaks in the Western Hemisphere, including major volcanic and alpine landscapes. East of the mountains, the Pampas form expansive plains supporting agriculture and river systems that flow toward the Atlantic. Further south, Patagonia transitions into rugged terrain characterised by glacial valleys, steppe plains, mountain ranges, and large lakes formed by past glacial activity. The visual structure of the country is defined by this progression from alpine mountains to wide plains and southern glacial landscapes.
